Welcome to Our Teen Page

Choosing Northwest Therapy Group, PLLC

How We Keep Your Information Safe

We understand how important privacy is, especially when it comes to talking about your personal life. Here’s how we protect your information:

Confidentiality for Teens in Washington State

In Washington State, teens aged 13 and older have the same confidentiality rights as adults in therapy. This means your sessions and personal information are private. However, there are some important exceptions:

  • If your therapist believes you are a danger to yourself or others, confidentiality may need to be broken to ensure safety.
  • Therapists are mandated reporters. This means if you disclose current or past abuse, your therapist is required by law to make a report.

Your therapist will discuss these limits to confidentiality with you openly and answer any questions you may have about how this works. We want you to feel safe and informed every step of the way.

  • Secure Communication: Whether you see your therapist online or in person, we use secure platforms to keep your information safe.
  • Parental Involvement:  As with an adult in therapy, you have control over what information is released in therapy and who it is released to. Your therapist can help to guide you on how to share your information with those you choose to release your information to.

Talking to Your Parents or Guardians About Therapy

It can be tough to start a conversation with your parents or guardians about therapy, but we’re here to help. Here are a few tips on how to bring it up:

  1. Be Honest About How You Feel: Tell them how you’ve been feeling lately, whether it's stress, sadness, or anxiety. Be clear about how you think therapy can help.
  2. Ask for Support, Not Permission: Frame the conversation as asking for their help in getting support, rather than asking for permission to seek therapy.
  3. Use “I” Statements: For example, “I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed, and I think talking to a therapist might help me.”
  4. Show Them Information: Share this page or other resources with them so they understand the benefits of therapy for teens like you.
  5. Talk About Confidentiality: Let them know that your therapist will keep your information private, which might make them feel more comfortable with the idea.

Tips for Keeping a Healthy Mental Health

We know that maintaining good mental health can be challenging, especially as a teen. Here are some simple ways to take care of your mental well-being:

  1. Stay Connected: Keep in touch with friends and family who make you feel supported.
  2. Practice Self-Care: Whether it's journaling, playing sports, or listening to music, find time to do things that make you happy.
  3. Limit Social Media: It's easy to compare yourself to others online. Take breaks from social media if it makes you feel anxious or down.
  4. Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is essential for your mental health. Try to get 8-10 hours of sleep every night.
  5. Talk About Your Feelings: Whether it’s with a friend, parent, or therapist, talking about your feelings can help you work through them.
  6. Set Boundaries: Learn to say "no" when you feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to take a step back when you need time for yourself.

Katie has always had a passion for serving others. Her husband retired from the U.S. Army in June of 2021 after 20 years of service during which time Katie had the privilege of volunteering and working with military families within his units in various capacities. She quickly learned the challenges that military families face as individuals and in relationship to having to frequently relocate, endure deployments, and manage other mental and emotional obstacles. Katie's experiences and desire to serve others led her to add on to her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Louisville and achieve her Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University.

Katie works primarily with teens, adults, and couples providing therapy in treating relationship issues, depression, anxiety, anger, life transitions, and self-esteem issues. She has experience in working with military families and is LGBTQ+ friendly. She is committed to helping clients feel more empowered, develop healthier ways of thinking and behaving by tapping into their own strengths and finding meaning and purpose in their lives. The theoretical approaches Katie uses include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Gottman, Positive Psychology, and Strength-Based Therapy.

In her spare time, you can find Katie gardening, biking, hiking, taking a Zumba class, spending time with family, and watching documentaries.

Hi! My name is Amelia, and I’d first like to say that I know that asking for help can feel overwhelming so I want to acknowledge, celebrate and thank you for taking that first huge step!

Over the last 9+ years, I have worked with individuals and families confronting many different, all-too-prevalent challenges including depression, anxiety and stress, autism spectrum disorders and ADHD, history of trauma and abuse, substance use concerns, family conflict and grief and loss, to name a few. I also have experience with and feel passionately about supporting members of the LGBTQ+ community and work diligently within a culturally-sensitive and -informed approach. I've worked with 2 years olds through 72 year olds across a multitude of settings from outpatient care, to residential treatment, from school-based, to in-home, and in the community.

I obtained a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California where I fell madly in love with the thought of a world where no one ever needs to feel alone. I am a fully licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in CA and conduct duties as a clinical supervisor. Since moving to Lacey, from Los Angeles, in the summer of 2023, I have become a fully Licensed Mental Health Counselor in this most beautiful state of WA as well.

I am undeniably excited about the work I do because I'm able to learn about the lives of the most incredible people! Getting to know and appreciate an individual’s story, however tormented, however complex, however restricted, however raw, is what truly drives me in this work and helping uncover unique, beautiful potential is the most rewarding of passions. The person-centered perspective I hold means that I will meet you where you are at. You are a human facing an obstacle, be it large or small, and together we can figure out a way over, around or through. The existential approach that I also employ means that I understand the power (and likewise the pressure and weight) of finding meaning and having purpose. I so look forward to getting to know you, and helping you know yourself. I will boost you from within, from that deep part of you that is uniquely you, by connecting you to it so that you and I can solve problems together, leaning on the strengths and resilience that are only yours. Lastly, I have a very strong love of life and have not lost the joy in finding fun that children perpetually have, that adults can often lose sight of. I use humor a lot in my work, so that we can, together, enjoy the hard work that therapy asks of us.

Works with ages: 2+ and families

Currently living in the city of Lacey for the past twelve years. I was brought up and married into a military family lifestyle, which led me to travel to my two favorite places: Italy and Germany.

I am a wife and mother of two wonderful children who like to keep me busy. We enjoy spending family time together: going on adventures, trying new foods, singing, painting, anything Disney or Anime, or finding new places to try.

As a therapist, I believe in the importance of fostering inclusivity within our community and am passionate about working with Individuals, Children/Families, Military personnel experiencing PTSD, and supporting individuals in the LGBTQ+ community in either individual or family sessions.

Welcome, I am glad you made it! My name is Maxie. Washington became home for me in 2016 after living in the Southwest majority of my life. I am married and have three young kiddos. I have found a love of working alongside individuals who find themselves struggling with finding purpose and identity. Whether you are a new parent working your way back to yourself (or your partner), a teen struggling with depression, anxiety, or finding your sense of self, or maybe you're someone who struggles with grief and loss, I am ready to walk with you through it. I believe in the significance of being able to ethically serve clientele of diverse backgrounds including individuals from conservative backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, Civil Service, Veterans, and parents/guardians. I believe that healing begins once we can be honest with ourselves.  Hi, my name is Hope (she/her) and I moved to Washington with my family after earning my M.A. in Counseling and Art Therapy from Southwestern College in 2021.  I have been married for twenty years and we are the proud parents of a (now adult) transgender son.  In my previous life, I was a public elementary school art teacher, where I developed many of the client and strength-based approaches I use in counselling today.  Art making is one of many approaches that I use, and it is not required, however I do encourage the use of art materials in therapy to express what cannot be said in words, and as a way to work though intense emotions.

I have experience with and a passion for working with LGBTQ+ teens and adults, as well as those who struggle with anxiety, panic disorder, depression, PTSD, life transitions, displacement/exile due to political or natural causes, existential questioning, and bereavement.  I believe in collaborative mental health care and that you are your own expert.  I am here to listen and to offer creative and tangible skills to support

the unique and wonderful being you are, at exactly where you are.  I am available for in-person and tele-health.

Hey, I’m Tim. I have recently moved to Washington in 2024 after spending a year in the West of Ireland. I find meaning and fulfillment in pursuing therapeutic connections for the purpose of providing a space where all my clients can feel seen, heard, and valued. I developed my passion for helping individuals from my personal experiences working with adolescents in inner city Chicago, volunteering with medical and music teams for both earthquake victims in Haiti and Burmese Refugees in Thailand, as well as mentoring in a Neurodivergent program in Denver. I am passionate about connection and processing how relationships and events impact areas of identity, emotional regulation, familial attachment, human induced trauma, and life transitions. I am client centered and strive to provide safety, acceptance, and empowerment for all my clients from unique backgrounds and experiences. I incorporate CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Somatic therapy.

I love to work with adolescents 10+, college students, adults with childhood trauma, and parents with children still at home.

I was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am a disabled veteran from 12 years in the US Army. I was awarded the Purple Heart from my wounds I received on my first deployment to Iraq. I came to Washington in 2010 while still in the Army and was stationed at Joint Base Lewis McChord. I have called Lacey, Washington my home for the past 11 years.

I attended Saint Martin’s University for both my undergraduate degree and master’s degree. I received my BA in Psychology, and my MA in Counseling Psychology.

I am a big nerd and love to play video games as well as entertain myself with Marvel and DC entertainment. I am also a huge fan of everything Star Wars and Disney. I am also a father of two, my son and daughter. My family is my world.

As a counselor, I understand how systems can cause oppression. I use a combination of techniques and approaches depending on the client's needs. I believe that the grief in an individual’s life is quite possibly the most important catalyst to find and deal with. Grief is in everyone and learning how to live with it and accept it is very important.

In my work with children, I use non-directive play therapy and let the child lead with what they need to do. I let them invite me into their play to show that they have control of their therapy. I also have used sand trays with children.

I think that I have a huge heart and want to help you find peace within yourself if that is what you need. I also understand that sometimes you may need a place to go and vent about your life in a private and confidential setting. I want to offer you a safe space, that is non-judgmental, and supportive. I try to maintain a flexible schedule for my clients.

Hello all!~ I’m Frank, and I’m in the midst of my Master’s in Counseling program, which is going well! I have lived in a variety of different places around Washington state between Tacoma and the Tri-Cities area, but finally ended up settling right here in Thurston County, where I have been for the last eleven years. I attended Timberline High School when I first moved here, then transferred to South Puget Sound Community College, and finally Saint Martin’s University for their in-depth psychology, trauma, and counseling curriculum.

I initially fell in love with philosophy courses because they gave me a place to openly discuss ideas in relation to societal structure, gender norms, ethical frameworks, religion, and existence itself with my peers and superiors alike. While this wasn’t the safest or the most judgment-free zone for discussing the ideas that had been bouncing around in my head for my entire life, it still helped me grow overall and encouraged me to actively challenge my beliefs about the world around me. I fundamentally believe that we will never reach full maturation, but that life is a constant process of learning and growth. Trees are the epitome of growth, and while they do eventually reach a fixed height, they never stop branching off to ‘replace’ fallen branches, nor do their trunks ever stop growing in width. Yet we don't measure a tree based on the branches it's lost in life. Humans are fascinated by counting the annual rings on a tree-stump; we inherently are captivated by growth.

I generally believe in a collaborative approach to counseling, because I feel that (even if you don't feel like it) you are the number one professional in the field of YOU. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as Person-Centered Therapy, best support that approach, but most of all I want to provide a platform for you to be heard, no matter what you have to say; to be safe, no matter what you’re feeling; and a space for you to grow, at whatever rate you feel comfortable.
